August 26, 2022 - Chipping Success, News Archive, and IG Mood Board

Sup world,

F*** I missed the last two weeks. Been super busy!! I've been overwhelmed with everything from studying brand identity, mocking up new designs, fulfilling Henley 2.0 orders, and more. But I'm enjoying it so much. It feels good to be putting in work that I care about and that I am truly invested in. Together, we're bouta make Montes Collective the most widely adopted golf streetwear brand worldwide. But let's start small and make our way there.

I'm finally touching the 70s again lfg.

News Archive

I finally got around to making these weekly newsletters available to the public on the website. Comments will be allowed so you can share your thoughts and commentary on any of the topics! However, I will be posting them to the website 7 days after the original newsletter is sent to your inboxes. This is because I will be dropping exclusive content, products, deals, and easter eggs that I want to make available to you loyal subscribers first. You guys will get priority on these deals before it makes its way onto the website. Here is a link to the News Archive on our website where all newsletters will be made available for your reading.

Chipping Success

Alright, a few weeks ago someone requested that I do a video on Chipping Tips. I don't quite have the time to put a video out on this yet but what I'll do is break down my approach in this riiiighhttt heeerrreee email. Please keep in mind that, I too, am still on my own journey to scratch golf. So this breakdown right here is just what has gotten my game to where it is today... which is a washed high school golfer who still believes he can shoot under par consistently hahahahaha. But I can tho. Watch me. Then I'm gonna pull up to the 2023 US Amateur absolutely dripppedddd out and win that trophy.

Ok I break down the chipping sequence into 3 levels. These 3 levels are actually relevant with any part of your game. But a few newsletters ago I touched on the fact that your golf game is divided into two parts: decision making and execution. You need to make decisions based on your level of execution.

When you have the wedge in your hands and you're chipping, your main goal is to obviously get "up and down" (I also touched on this golf term in the last newsletter). In order to get up and down, your chip must make its way onto the putting surface on your 1st shot. This means no fat chips, no duffs, no thinned shots, etc. This leads me to Level 1.

Level 1: Consistent Contact, just get on the green

A lot of beginner golfers lose strokes around the greens because they can't make clean contact with the ball. When you're learning how to chip, you need to get super familiar with how your wedge interacts with the turf. Pay attention to your lie. Are you on the fringe/fairway on a tight lie? Are you in the rough? Is it sitting up? Is it buried? All of these factors must be considered because it also affects how you position your wedge when you address the ball. At Level 1, don't worry too much about how close your chip is to the hole. I want you to focus on making clean, consistent contact over and over again so that your next shot is on the putting surface with your putter in your hand, and you can put your wedge back in your bag ;) kapiche? Succeeding at Level 1 should eliminate at least 5 strokes a round if you're the golfer known for bouncing the ball around the green with your wedge. Unnecessary strokes. Let's say your ball is green side, and there is a bunker that is in your way between you and the flag. What decision are you making here? Are you trying to land it right on top of the bunker so it trickles down to 2 feet? Nah. We ain't there yet. This is Level 1. Make the swing that you're comfortable and confident in. Even if it means you'll land past the flag. Your next shot would be much better with a putter in your hand from 50 feet, than stuck in the bunker with a wedge in your hand again.

Alright that's enough on this for now. We'll go over Level 2 next week. But Level 1 is important because once you are comfortable getting consistent, clean contact, then what that gives you is confidence. And once you have that confidence, well, that can make you a scaaarrryyy mf. And you're going to absolutely need that going into Level 2. Get that practice in this week and I'll see y'all next week for Level 2.

IG Mood Board

Check out the new look on the Montes Collective Instagram Feed. I've finally found a way to put my vision and concept together for the brand. I've had fun with it recently because I've been able to use our IG feed as a mood board and as an outlet for my creativity. Give us a follow if you haven't already! Also we're almost at 600 followers, meaning it's almost time for another follower giveaway. Let's run these numbers uppppp.

Beginner Golf Term of the Week: Rough

The rough in golf is the long grass the typically borders the fairway. The grass is kept longer on purpose because it's further away from the course of play.

"Yo did you hit the fairway?"

"Nah, I blocked my drive right and it ended up in the rough."

Henley 2.0s have been packed and shipped and are in customers' hands! Thanks to everyone who placed an order. Hope you enjoy 'em. Here is a link below if you'd like to order one for yourself.

Hit 'em straight this weekend and I'll see you guys next week.

Cheers,

JR Montes
