July 1, 2022 - Getting rid of the mid-round shanks (how I do it)

Sup world,

It's currently 1:09 AM and I'm here sitting in my kitchen drafting up this week's newsletter. Today was a long day, sheeeeshhh. We are 3 people away from reaching 100 subscribers!! Fawwwwkkk yeaaa duuuhhhdddd. Idk how many of you actually read this every week, but if you do, you're appreciated. Let's fucken go.

This weekend is 4th of July weekend so there's a lot of shit going on these next few days. A few of my best friends will be in town this weekend visiting from the bay area. Our homie Blake flew in last night and we had a tee time set up at Torrey (North) for 6:15 AM. First one's out babbbbbyyyyyyyy. However that also meant we were up and out of the house by 5:15 AM. We played 18 and then I had to work at the restaurant from 2:30 to 11. I'm exhausted holy shit. Working at the restaurant fucking blows, but it really does give me the best opportunities to work on Montes Collective full time during the day. For those of you who don't know, I quit my full time job in tech sales to pursue Montes Collective full time. After quitting, I picked up a part time job at the restaurant I worked at in college so I don't become homeless while building the brand.

Mid-Round Shanks and My Fix

You ever get to the course all excited to ball out and play some good golf, and you take a swing and just hit a hosel rocket straight right? Then you walk to your next shot and you do the same exact thing? No? Just me? Ok cool.

Well it happened to me today at Torrey. Sometimes, I start a round of golf and my tempo is just completely out of sync. I expect to hit flush shots at 100% speed right out of the car when that just isn't the right way to go about it. What ends up happening is my tempo just gets too quick and it's hard for me to control the club face at impact. I had the "shanks" with me through the 2nd hole but I was able to shake it off on the 3rd/4th hole and finish the day with 4 birdies, what it dooo baayybbeeeee!!! Here are a few tips that have worked for me for getting rid of the shanks mid-round.

1. Pick up your comfortable club

-It doesn't matter if you're 300 yards away from the green. If your money club only goes 120 yards, pick it up and get a feel of finding the club face. For me, it's my 54* wedge or my 8i. You can still walk away with a par or bogey by laying up. This is way better than trying to force a shot and shanking it multiple times and walking away with a triple. Typically, your best club is the one that you swing comfortably and with good tempo. Get the feeling of hitting the ball out of the center of club face. And it's a lot easier to do that with a club that you are comfortable with.

2. Swing at 50%-70% speed

-When you have the shanks, the idea is to make contact with the ball so you can get the feeling and start building momentum. Don't worry about flushing a pure shot at 100%. You should set the expectation that the first few holes of your round (especially if you didn't hit the range before) will be for warming up. Drop your yardages by 1-2 clubs and just focus on making good contact and hitting it straight.

3. Enjoy the day

-At the end of the day, there are worst things you could be doing with your time than being out on the golf course on a beautiful day. Drop all expectations and just enjoy being out there. Golf is supposed to be fun. Work with what you got that day and make the most of the time you have out there.

Kept it pretty short for this one. I apologize for the half-assed newsletter this week y'all, but I am freakin' exhausted. I fell asleep 3 times writing this lol. I'll have a sicker one for all of you next week.

If you haven't pre-ordered a Henley 2.0 yet, you can do so here:

Hit 'em straight this weekend and I'll see you guys next week.

Cheers,

JR Montes
