July 8, 2022 - Road to Scratch, Amateur Golf, Stealth Giveaway Update, and more.

Morning world,

God damn it. I had this email drafted up and scheduled to send this morning at 6 AM haha. I accidentally set it up for tomorrow. I'm trash. Enjoy you guys.

Friday morning so you already know. Another newsletter comin' in hot for your inbox from Montes Collective. Hope everyone's 4th of July week was epic. I'm kinda freesytling on this one and just dropping random thoughts I've had this week about golf and the building of this brand. Enjoy.

Road to Scratch

Golf is freakin' hard yo. Watching the US Open a few weeks back got me super motivated to work on my game. I've been playing golf for 14 years now. I first picked it up in 7th grade when my dad picked my brother and me up from school and took a different turn home. We found ourselves at a driving range with a set of garage sale golf clubs. Out of 100 balls, I hit 1 of them off the middle of the club face and I've been trying to chase that feeling over and over again ever since. My game progressed so fast. Within 6 months I was playing on the course and shooting around bogey golf. When my game is clicking, I can put a good round together. However I'd say that my "stock" game right now is a golfer that shoots between 80-86; and unfortunately, sometimes in the 90s hahah smh. I've shot in the 70s plenty of times but I've never been the golfer that pulls up to the course out of the car and just goes out and shoots a 75. I want to change that. And I want to document it. I want to show y'all the ups and downs of the process and whats working and what's not working for me. The content I'll be making available will be on different platforms. Short-form content for TikTok/IG, and longer-form content for the YouTube channel. I'd love to ball out at the US AM/Open one time and be absolutely dripped out in the final rounds. How sick would that be.

Stealth Giveaway Update

The entries are in and closed. We are sitting at 36 names and 2,480 entries in the raffle. Some names have more entries than others. Just depends on the activity the entrant put in when entries were open. We will be announcing the winner on Instagram Live at 7 PM (PT) so make sure you tap in to see the winner selected live!!!

Amateur Golf / Update on the Game

Alright so I think the plan is to start working on the game a little more proactively instead of just showing up to the course and seeing what I shoot. I want to track a legit handicap. I've heard good things about the Grint app?? I'll give it a shot. I also want to reactivate my SCGA membership so I can have an official GHIN number again. I am thinking of starting a Montes Collective SCGA club so we can all have legit handicaps/indexes. Anyone in SD/SoCal down?? I think we need a minimum of 10 people so hit our DMs if you'd like to be a part of it. We can do range seshes and afternoon golf leagues with teams and cash prizes and shit.

For those of you who read last week's newsletter, you know that my game has been all over the place. I'll have rounds with 5 birdies but still shoot in the 80s because of doubles and triples on the card. It's frustrating. I played Torrey last week with 4 birds and shot 82. Then we played Golf Club of California in Fallbrook and I shot a 93...... yikes. It got me so fucked up that we booked a round with some of the boys at work to go back tomorrow morning so we're teeing off tomorrow morning at 7 AM to get my revenge. (Writing this on Thursday night and dropping on Friday morning for your morning read). *Update: Played a lot better today, but still sucked. Shanked the ball 3-4 times and two Triple Bogeys and shot 86 with Peter beating me on 18 to win the match. Fucken brutal. But yea, I'm hyped to see what I can put together tomorrow *haha sike but I'll be more intentional with my shot selection and seeing what's working and not working tomorrow. I'll update y'all next week on the Road to Scratch!!! LFG

PRE-ORDER THE SHIRT BELOW IF YOU NEED SOME NEW SUMMER THREADS FOR THE COURSE. WE'VE SOLD 39 SO FAR AND I'M TRYNA GET US TO 50!!

JR Montes
